Grow Your Own Avocado Tree

Let's grow a free tree!

I have tried growing many things from store bought produce... lettuce, celery, green onions, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, lemon, and now avocados.  To grow an avocado tree remove the pit from the fruit (yes, technically it's a fruit), scrap the flatter end of the seed with a knife gently to remove the skin, and insert 3 toothpicks evenly around it for support at the top of a glass. I use mason jars or drinking glasses for this.  Set the seed on top of a jar that fits the toothpicks, fill jar with water halfway up the seed, and place in a sunny windowsill for 2-3 months!  Wait to transplant when the roots are very long and wrap in a big curl around the bottom of the jar and the stem is very sturdy.
I began this project on June 2nd of this year, and by August 2nd it was ready to transfer to a pot!  I have friends who have started theirs 2 years ago and now the leaves are as long as a woman's hand, deep green, and shiny.  So many things can be grown indoors. Start with your fridge and start experimenting!  Happy growing!
